Frequently asked questions

Where do you meet - and at what times?

We meet in New Ash Green Youth Centre on Mondays during school term time. We start at 8pm and finish at 9.30pm. However, we will meet up with other Explorer Scout Units for various acvtivities so the night may change - but you'll always have loads of notice.

Can I come along for a taster session?

Yes! If you are interested in joining the Excelsior Explorer Scout Unit we suggest that you come along to a couple of our meetings to ‘try us out’. There is no charge for this and no further commitment is necessary.

However, you must make arrangements with a leader before attending (see ‘How do you communicate with members' below) so that we know to expect you and you must let us have this completed registration form up-front.

What happens if I decide to join?

There is a four week trial period to see if you like us - and we like you! It's important you accept the ethos of Scouting and what we are trying to achieve. During that four week period, you will work towards your Membership Badge and you will then be invested as an Explorer and member of the Unit.

What sort of activities do you do?

Our Programme varies from term-to-term with a significant amount of outdoors activity. We also run the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

Is there a charge for joining?

We charge a monthly subscription which is currently £13, and covers the cost of our routine meetings (hall hire, consumables, purchase of small items of equipment) and the annual payments that we have to make to the Scout Association. Subs MUST paid by Standing Order.

In addition, we may arrange activities during the term which incur costs over and above the term’s subscription e.g. trips out, weekends away.

Financial hardship should never prevent someone from participating in the Unit activities and we will always seek to subsidise in these cases. A parent or carer should contact one of the leaders if this is relevant.

How do you communicate with members?

We use email as our main form of communication with the Explorers – and expect responses from you when necessary! In an emergency we may use texts. We also have our own closed Facebook Group to which all members are given access.

All communications are copied to parents and carers so that they know what is happening. This also means that if you don’t have an email address yourself, you can get the information from your parent/carer.

The Unit Leaders can be contacted via the Contact Us page on this website or via an email address that you’ll be given when you join.

Please let us know if communication by email will pose a problem.

Are there lots of rules to follow?

No, but we will have a Code of Conduct , which all members are expected to sign and respect.

What's the uniform and where can I buy it?

The baseball cap is not part of the uniform - nor is the staff

If you decide to join the Unit you’ll need to buy a uniform which comprises a shirt (or blouse for girls if they prefer), navy blue trousers and scarf.

The shirt/blouse is a kaki colour.

The scarf is purple with a white border (the same as the other Explorers in Swanley District).

Uniform can be bought from a number of outlets including our own District Scout Shop which offers a discount

When do I have to start wearing a uniform?

We ask that you start wearing a uniform as soon as you can after you decide to join the Unit. If you are moving into Explorers from another Scout section/other uniformed organisation please would you come in that uniform (if it still fits), or at least wear the scarf, unless told otherwise.

Who are the leaders and how do I contact them?

We have a leader team of four - with a further rota of five leaders who help from time to time. We also bring in specialist instructors and leaders for specific events. You can contact them via the form on our Contact page.

What is My.Scout and how does it work?

My.Scout is the parent front to the Online Scout Manager (OSM) system that Excelsior uses to reduce the time leaders have to spend on Unit administration tasks.

My.Scout gives parents access to the:

  • Explorer notice board
  • list of payment schedules (we use GoCardless via OSM)
  • list of Explorer events
  • programme for the current term
  • badge status for their Explorer along with an image indicating where they should be sewn onto the uniform
  • Explorer’s personal details (via an additional layer of security).
